Congratulations to the Literary Magazine students who were inducted into the National Scholastic Press Association's Journalism Honor Roll for 2020.
Charlotte Beck, Senior Maggie Christopher, Junior Elizabeth Cotton, Senior Aiden Kaplan, Junior Ella Rasmussen, Junior Bhavana Veeravalli, Senior Celie Waddington, Senior Abigail Welch, Senior "These outstanding students excel in both the classroom and in their school newsrooms," associate director Gary Lundgren said. "The future of journalism is bright if these students are any indication." In addition to serving for at least two years on a student media staff, the students have earned a 3.5 or higher grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. Columbia Scholastic Press Association has named Roars and Whispers a Silver Crown winner!
The Crown Awards honor top student publications chosen from CSPA’s members. Crowns are selected for overall excellence in a head-to-head comparison. Student publishing in news, magazine, yearbook or digital (online) formats are all-eligible. During Crown consideration, publications are judged on their excellence as shown by their design, photography, concept, coverage and writing. This is the seventh Crown Award for Roars and Whispers. Congratulations to Elizabeth Park, a sophomore on the literary magazine staff, for winning a National Gold Medal from the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. More than 110,000 students submitted nearly 320,000 works of art and writing to the 2020 Scholastic Awards, and Elizabeth's work placed in the top 1% of submissions! Although the award ceremony in New York City has been cancelled, student work will be published in the Scholastic Online Galleries at artandwriting.org in June. Their names will also be listed in the Yearbook 2020, a companion publication to The Best Teen Art and The Best Teen Writing anthologies which feature a selection of work by National Medalists. Providence High School students won a total of 33 regional writing awards from the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. They were honored at a ceremony at Spirit Square on February 8, 2020. The five Gold Key winners are currently competing in the national competition in New York City. Winners will be announced in March.

Bhavana won 5th place for her 2019 Design Portfolio submission to the National Scholastic Press Association. She was honored at an awards ceremony at the National Convention in November. Natalie Thulien, a PHS graduate, won an Honorable Mention for her spread design.

Roars & Whispers is a student publication at Providence that combines elements of creative writing and design with the creation of a magazine. This year-long, A-day/B-day class provides a creative outlet for students to express their voices and become part of a close-knit group of students.
