Roars and Whispers has been named a Pacemaker finalist for the sixth time. The National Scholastic Press Association has recognized only 15 magazines as finalists in the 2016 Magazine Pacemaker competition.
“The Pacemaker is the association’s preeminent award and is often called the Pulitzer Prize of scholastic media,” said Laura Widmer, executive director. “NSPA is honored to recognize the best of the best.” The Pacemaker has been awarded since 1927. Winners will be announced at the National Journalism Convention in Seattle on Saturday, April 11th. Congratulations!
The following are winners of the Essay Contest: 1st Place Katherine Welch 2nd Place Mayuri Dongre 3rd Place Zoe Knepp The winner receives $100 and moves on to regional competition. The runners-up each receive awards of $50. Emma Carter and Hannah Magraw also were named Best in Show for Writing. Emma Carter won the Governor's Award for Writing, and her work will be on display at the Governor's Mansion this spring. Hannah Magraw is the American Voices nominee for the Mid-Carolina Region. She is also the winner of the Adams Outdoor Advertising Award, and her work will be featured on a billboard this spring. Joseph Chong, Zoe Knepp, Katherine Welch, Emma Carter, Hannah Magraw, Remy Lucien (L to R). Providence students won 84 regional writing awards from the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. In other words, 25% of the awards given to the entire region. The list of students and their awards is attached.
Six students won a total of nine prestigious Gold Key awards. These students will be honored at an awards ceremony on Saturday , February 4th at Spirit Square Center for the Arts. They are also entered into competition for the national awards in New York City.
