Congratulations to Remy Lucien, the Winner of the 2016 Letters About Literature writing contest! The contest is sponsored nationally by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, and in our state by the North Carolina Center for the Book. As the North Carolina winner, Remy will receive a $300 prize, and his letter will be sent to the Library of Congress for entry in the national judging.
Hannah Magraw, a Junior and a Literary Magazine editor, was awarded the Governor's Award for Excellence in Writing. Only one student in the entire state received this award, Hannah was honored at an Awards Ceremony at the Governor's Mansion on Monday, April 25th. Her work will be on display in the mansion for the next month. Hannah is pictured here with Adviser Marva Hutchinson at the ceremony.
Three Literary Magazine students have won National Medals in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

As a Gold Medalist, Samantha Claypoole will be honored at the National Awards Ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City on June 2, 2016.
Providence High School's Literary Magazine, Roars and Whispers, was awarded a Silver Crown from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association at their 92nd annual Scholastic Convention. The Awards Convocation for Scholastic Crown recipients took place on Friday, March 18th in New York City. CSPA, an international student press association, awards Crowns based on the general excellence of a magazine as shown by their design, photography, concept, coverage and writing.
Ten Providence students were honored with special writing awards at the MidCarolina Region Writing Awards for the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.
Joseph Chong, a sophomore, and Abigail Scheper, a senior, won the American Voices Award for their poetry. They will now compete for this award at the national level.
Hannah Magraw, a junior, won the Governor's Award and the Adam's Outdoor Billboard Award. Her work will be featured at the Governor's Mansion this spring and on a billboard here in the Charlotte Region.

Both the local Scholastic Art and Writing Contest and the local Optimist Essay contest have announced their winners, and the Roars and Whispers staff has had a good showing!

Congratulations to Katherine Welch for also coming in first in the Optimist competition. And a special congratulations to Massiel Islas and Joey Chong, fellow Providence students who won Gold in the Scholastic Contest. Good writing!
